Women's Involvement in Constituent Assembly in Baglung

programme on "Women's Involvement in Constituent Assembly" in Baglung on 1 st September,2007.

The main objective of the program was to highlight the importance of women's involvement in all processes of the Constituent Assembly and the importance of voters education for the benefit of women

The sessions also discussed on the legal aspects of the election, women's empowerment and upliftment.

Approximately, 70 women participants representing media and civil society attended the program. The resource person of the training program was Advocate Basanta Basnet, an expert in the field of law and Constituent Assembly.

There was an overwhelming response from the women residing in rural areas and their utmost interest in attaining knowledge about the Constituent Assembly Election, electoral process and women's involvement in the election.

President of Sancharika Samuha Babita Basnet gave a brief overview of the activiites of Sancharika Samuha and stressed on the need to generate awareness of the importance of the elections to the Constituent Assembly up to the grassroots level.

Election Commissioner Tol Raj Upadhyaya of Baglung Election Commission Office informed that the voter's education program will be launched in the district at the earliest. Election Commissioner Upadhyaya also noted that the population of women is higher in comparison to men so women participation in election will be satisfactory in the district.

Likewise, Chief at the Zonal Police Office SSP Bigyan Sharma briefed the security arrangements in 3 election constituencies of the district.SSP Sharma further added that mobility of the armed police force will be high to provide security.

Member of the newly formed Women Commission Ratna Sherchan stressed that the leaders of the 8 political parties should provide special arrangement for increased participation of women in politics.Sherchan viewed that all women organizations should stand in one common ground and create pressure if time demads.

President of the Federation of Nepalese Journalist Baglung Chapter Rajesh Bhandari was the Chairman at the inauguration of the training program.

The participants were the women from Birgunj, Parsa, Rautahat representing the cross section of the society.

They were women journalist, teachers, health personnel, women professionals,ents, teachers, political leaders, representatives from civil societies and house hold women.

The main resource person at the program was Advocate Mr. Basanta Thapa, President of Sancharika Samuha Ms. Babita Basnet, and Executive Board Member Ms. Pragya Ghimire facilitated the program.

Speaker at the program, President of Nepal Bar Association and Network of Professional Organization (PAPAD) Mr. Rajeshwor Tiwari, Senior Journalist Mr. Chandra Kishore Jha, Leader of Nepal Sadbhawana Party Mr. Nijamuddin Sumani and Chairman of Dalit Mr. Mukti Samaj Mr. Raman Dev Paswan highlighted on the importance of holding Constituent Assembly on time to materialize the concept of New Nepal.
